Greenwich Community Learning Champions
The Learning Champions Project started in Greenwich as a pilot in 2001 via a statutory and voluntary sector
partnership. In response to the government's initiative for Lifelong Learning, their aim was to promote
continuing learning for Greenwich residents over the age of 19. It is well proven that education, at
whatever age, is of great benefit to the individual. Not only does training and education raise the
standard of skills within the workforce, but it also raises their self-esteem and confidence. By recruiting
from within the communities, the project reached those people who would not ordinarily be attracted back into education.
Team and Culture Building - Learning Champions in Greenwich are encouraged to attend monthly 'Forum' meetings
where they can meet and exchange information and advice and give support to one another. An 'e-forum' is
planned so that Champions can access each other via the website. At Volunteer Centre Greenwich we have
worked hard to change the culture of the role of the Learning Champion to one that is self-directing.
VCG are a volunteer/user led organisation and Learning Champions are best placed to tell us what
educational services are needed within their own communities.
Training and Development - All new Learning Champions will be asked to attend a mandatory one-day course
that will clearly outline their role. They will then be invited to attend and optional 20-week
programme where they will achieve a LOCN accredited qualification. These learning programmes are
specifically designed for Learning Champions to give them the relevant skills and information they
need to execute their role in the best way they can. For example, they will provide support and
guidance into learning to other adults within their chosen community and encourage community members
to undertake education or training, whether for leisure or employment, whether accredited or non-accredited.
The great thing about being a Learning Champion - is that you can be a Champion in any situation. All
you have to do is go about your daily business as usual but if someone is interested in continuing learning
you have all the information they might need so you can pass it on. Of course, if you would particularly
like to 'target' a specific community, there is no reason why you cannot follow this path too.
