V-involved Project

Recommendation Seven of the Russell Commission Report called for "a step change in the number of young people volunteering and the diversity of volunteers. This [would] require a significant expansion in the number of available opportunities with effective targeting to ensure that young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are more likely to volunteer".

The v project is a new national youth volunteering initiative which has been designed to support and engage young people in a wide range of volunteering opportunities that lead to their development of skills for life, skills for the workplace and, importantly, impacts positively on the community.

vinvolved projects will generate a wide range of short-term, part-time and full-time volunteering opportunities for 16-25s.

  1. Are inclusive and attract a diverse range of young volunteers
  2. Respond to young people's passions and concerns and enable them to take action on the issues they care about
  3. Improve skills and support progression onto further volunteering, education, employment or training
  4. Encourage high levels of youth involvement
  5. Strive for innovation and creativity
  6. Have a positive impact on communities across England

Volunteer Centre Greenwich (VCG) based at the Forum @ Greenwich, Trafalgar Road, is in the second year of their vinvolved project and is building a good reputation for making a difference however, everyone involved in the project has the appitite to push the peddal to the floor and to move forward and really make an impression.

As well as working with key local partners to develop imaginative new volunteering opportunities the project will also run a whole host of specialised and tailored training opportunities in new media (Podcasting, DJing, MCing, digital art, radio production) as well as other training in life skills, customer services and football coaching. These courses are not just "cameo performances" but will be made avaliable to young people who get involved with the project & we help sustain the project beyond the initial funding from v.

One of the key factors about this project is that as well as having the steering group, there will also be a v Project Planning Hub which will consist of the young people themselves. The "hub's" role will be to develop the project, ensuring that it is representative and consistent with what young people in Greenwich need and want.

The "hub" group will oversee the publicity, the look the and feel of the project ensuring this young peoples project is both for and delivered by young people themselves.
