Royal Visit - HRH Princess Anne Visited the Community Learning Champions Project

On the 7 July 2010 the Greenwich Community Learning Champions Project, managed by Volunteer Centre Greenwich, had the honour of receiving Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne to present awards to Community learning Champions.

Princess Anne is the Patron of the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE). The idea of the Community Learning Champions (CLC) project came from the Greenwich Lifelong Learning Plan and has been successfully run since its pilot in 2001. The impetus of the Lifelong Learning Plan is that if learning is viewed as lifelong, rather than just school based education, more citizens will uptake further learning which is empowering for the individual and the community at large. Under the CLC project volunteers are recruited as Learning Champions to promote learning within the community. The emphasis is on learning, whatever your age, that it should be fun and worthwhile and that it will help with your work, job-hunting, and makes us all better citizens

Volunteer Centre Greenwich started delivery of its CLC project in January 2005 and successfully put its best practice imprint on the project, so much so that VCG acts as consultant to other CLC projects. The success of VCG’s Project is a result of the hard work and time that each Learning Champion gives freely to help guide people in the community into learning opportunities. This paid off when VCG was selected by NIACE to host the Royal visit. This refects not only the learning campions’ hard work, but also the longevity and commitment that VCG has to promoting lifelong learning in Greenwich.

There is healthy mix of devoted long-standing Champions as well as an enthusiastic mix of novice Champions, allowing growth through mentoring and drive with new inspiration. On the day of the Royal visit our CLC’s arrived with the excitement and sense of honour that this type of event warrants. The day went very smoothly and was a credit to all involved.

Angela Willden, Nadine Hagen, Paul Roberts and Dorothy Ghanekar were our Champion speakers and did us proud, explaining what being a CLC means to them. The message that our speakers gave was that they have all helped empower others and in doing so have progressed in their chosen direction. Personally I would like to thank all of our Community Learning Champions as it was their achievements that enabled such a high profile event to take place.

I would also like to thank NIACE for selecting the Greenwich Community Learning Champions Project for this prestigious occasion.
